Sugar Cookies

Classic sugar cookies with a soft, buttery texture and just the right amount of sweetness, perfect for any occasion or holiday treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Colored sugar or sprinkles for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using).
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, until dough is soft but not sticky.
  6. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place onto prepared baking sheets.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar, or decorate with colored sugar or sprinkles.
  8. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are golden. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

For a festive touch, try adding lemon zest to the dough or dip cooled cookies in melted chocolate for extra flavor.
