This Hidden Heart Chocolate Loaf Cake is a delightful chocolatey treat with a surprise raspberry heart inside, perfect for special occasions or a romantic dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup raspberry jam (for hidden heart)
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, beat sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Add oil and vanilla extract and mix well.
  4. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk/milk mixture to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly.
  6. Carefully spoon raspberry jam in a heart shape along the center of the batter.
  7. Pour the remaining batter over the jam, covering it completely.
  8. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Optionally dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a more pronounced heart, chill the jam briefly before spooning it into the batter, and use a piping bag to shape the heart more precisely.
