  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for frosting)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until incorporated.
  6. Add milk as needed to achieve a soft dough that is not sticky.
  7. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  8. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  10. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
  11. To make frosting, beat together powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add food coloring if desired and mix well.
  12. Spread or pipe frosting onto cooled cookies and let set before serving.
