Ingredients

Scale
  • 14 oz firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water (slurry)
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Toss the tofu cubes in cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add tofu cubes and cook, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden and crispy, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, mirin, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and water.
  6. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the tofu and bring to a simmer.
  7. Add the cornstarch slurry to the skillet, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens and coats the tofu evenly.
  8. Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve warm.

Notes

For extra crunch, bake the tofu cubes at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes before pan-frying. Serve over steamed rice or alongside sautéed vegetables for a complete meal.
