  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp chai tea leaves or 2 chai tea bags (steeped)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, melted butter, salt, eggs, and steeped chai tea leaves (strained if using bags).
  3. Add the yeast mixture and gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  6. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves for the filling.
  7. Roll the dough into a 16×12 inch rectangle and spread softened butter over it.
  8. Sprinkle the spiced sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough.
  9. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge and cut into 12 equal rolls.
  10. Place rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  11. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to make glaze, then drizzle over warm rolls before serving.

Notes

For an extra chai flavor, sprinkle a pinch of chai spices over the glaze before it sets, or serve with a hot cup of chai tea.
